Site Promotion - Search Engines, Part 2In last month's installment, we discussed how search engines work and some of the factors that are taken into account when search engines decide how "relevant" your webpages are. This month, we'll examine a common website design technique that can hurt your position in the search engines. FramesA very common mistake that is made when designing websites is the use of frames. You've all probably experienced frames by now. This site's monthly tips are all accessed by a frame. The top frame displays links and the bottom frame displays articles. Sometimes frames are very convenient. However, you'll notice that our site doesn't rely on frames for navigation. This is because some search engines can not automatically follow links to other pages if they are contained within frames. This means that if you submit only your homepage to a search engine, the remaining pages of your website may not be indexed. This minimizes your site's chances of being found. Another problem can arise when submitting every page of your frames-based website to a search engine. Many sites rely on a frame for navigation and there are no links on any other pages back to the homepage. We've visited some top-ranking webpages only to discover that the page appears to be part of a larger site but is "orphaned" and has no links to the rest of the site. In these cases, we often find that the site has used frames for navigation. While an individual page from the site was ranked in the top ten for a particular search, the site was likely losing many visitors because the top-ranked page led nowhere. The navigation benefits that frames can provide can also be duplicated in a non-frames manner. When possible, avoid the use of frames. They add complication and can hinder your search engine visibility. Internet
