Sending File Attachments to AOL Users

April, 2004

America Online (AOL) is the largest ISP around and there are lots of people using it to get their e-mail. On occasion, we've tried to send files as attachments to AOL users only to get a message saying that the file came through <mime encoded> and our intended recipient could do nothing with it. Assuming you know how to attach files, there is a little technical issue that sometimes causes attachments to not go through properly in AOL.

According to AOL technical support, AOL mail software compresses file attachments causing them in some cases to be converted to .mim files. There is a decoder available through the AOL network. Click here for more information.

If you click on the type of operating system you are using, these pages will explain how to download the .mim decoder for the AOL mail system which will allow you to decode the files back into their original formats.

It's just a little tip, but it can help you avoid the frustration of not being able to get your files to your customers who use AOL.
